d20 Monster(s) of the Week- Seeder, Molesti and Wyrgith

This week I take a look at three arthropod-ish creatures from Bastion Press and Epidemic Books. The first two have names I would not have selected had they been my creations.

d20 Monster of the Week- Kr'awn

I was looking through some of the races and monsters I like (and havn't mentioned yet) and found one race that I think could be so much more. Light bulb- why not write a series for this blog where I take a monster or race, tell why they are interesting and how I would improve them. So first up are the kr'awn, a race of salamander/reptile people from Atlas' Fantasy Bestiary.

Magic spells and items I would like to see developed

Here are a few things I would like to see in terms of books on magic (some ideas are from one of my previous blog posts).

Vegetable Monstrosities 2

Reading more botany books, I am starting to see how much of a short shift I have been giving plant mutants on even basic ideas like soil quality. Fortunately I already have the tools to make up for this- mutation modifiers. More specifically the environmental dependance and decidious modifiers. Here are some of the more common mutations (physical and plant) and how the modifiers might be applied:

How Shoggoths (may have) started life on Earth

In the Cthulhu mythos, the origin of life on Earth was the result of the Elder Things' creations- the shoggoths. I was working on an ooze-ooze aggregate idea for Mutant Future and have come up with an idea on how shoggoths may have spawned other life. Aggregates are organisms that are made up of two or more species that are fusing into one. This is a real world concept- some cellular components, such as plant plastids, are an example of this.

Mutant Minerals and Plants

I am continuing my work on an article for D Infinity entitled Biology for Fantasy Settings. It is turning into a beast, not suprisingly. To provide actual content:

One of the fun things about Mutant Future is doing crazy stuff that works.

My Favorite Gamma World Creatures

Last list, at least for the time being.

This is the list I should have started with considering how much I prefer GW and Mutant Future to D&D style fantasy. Unlike my previous lists, most of these are monsters I like for themselves rather than what they can be used for in designing other monsters. Most of these are from the first or second editions but a few are from adventures or the 6th edition. All other sources are listed by edition and then title. 4e means the 4th edition from 1992, not the 7th edition of last year.

My Favorite d20 and Pathfinder Races

Like Mike, I enjoy new races. But mine have to be different somehow. I don't like elves, orcs, hobgoblins, dwarves, ogres and so on because they are so similar to humans. They can be replaced with human cultures quite easily. So here is my list by source.

Adventurer's Essentials: True Alchemy (Skortched Urf) [an excellent source of Pathfinder feats and races, not so much examples of alchemy]

My favorite d20 monsters

Ironically I have fewer d20 favorites than D&D even though there are a great deal more of the former. This list includes one template I forgot was a template when I was writing up the blog post on templates, one very non-standard creature and at the end I have two more D&D monsters I am adding to that list. So in alphabetical order:

Mutant Future's Saving Throws and their Possible Implications in other Games

There are 4 saving throws in Mutant Future- Energy Attacks, Death/Poison, Stun and Radiation. The first three are the equivilent of d20's Reflex, Fortitude and Will saves. Radiation is different. One could argue that the first three are real to a certain point- some people are quicker, healthier or more stubborn. But radiation is something that can't be resisted, at least in the real world. Yes, there are drugs that can slightly mitigate small doses but mutants rarely encounter small doses. So what does it mean?
