Skirmisher Publishing LLC is pleased to announce that it will be publishing Quactica: Battles for the Soul of Middle Aesopia, a set of miniature wargaming rules by veteran game designer and miniature sculptor Steve Lortz.

Set in a world inhabited by various races of anthropomorphic animals, the Quactica rules tie in with a beautiful line of miniatures scultped by Lortz and produced by Lance & Laser. Some of the compelling races battling for their place in the world of Middle Aesopia include usually-good Ducks, Dwargs, and Mice, and typically bad Porks, Ratmen, and Warthogs (the latter sometimes known as Hogres).

Shown below is a provisional cover for the Quactica rules book, which includes an original image by Marty Edwards that has been colorized by artist Sharon Daugherty.

Anyone interested in playtesting the Quactica rules while they are in production -- and receiving thanks for their efforts in the published edition of the book -- should contact the company at littlewars@skirmisher.com.

As a matter of fact there is! They are not actually a Skirmisher product but can be viewed and are available for sale at the Lance & Laser site, at http://lanceandlaser.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=LAL&Category_Code=Q.

I haven't sculpted any critters in a couple of years, My lovely wife and I are currently moving into a new house (it's a very old house, but new to us). I expect that I will be able within a few weeks time to recommence turning out more critters. I want to do some hosstriches and some Mallardian knights to ride them. I also want to expand the line of mice. Role-playing figures! We need more role-playing figures!

More later...

Have fun!

These are great names and great miniatures. I'd say Glorantha players would get a lot of use from them.

Are the miniatures a bit larger than 25mm scale? That's probably no bad thing, if it allows more detail in a non-human character.

They really are nice miniatures; Steve Lortz and Lance & Laser have done a great job with them.

Yes, some are bigger than 25mm, especially some of the multiple-part models like the Warthogs.

We have just finished mocking up a working cover for the Quactica miniatures rules and have posted it to the first message in this thread for anyone who is interested!

You know, I really liked the banner with its lettering style from the original cover. Lance & Laser uses it for the logo of the figure line. Is it too late to incorporate that into the cover? Would it help if I dig up the original art?

Thanks!

(This would be cool, but it's certainly no deal breaker!)

Have fun!

I'll work on this ... Yes, the cleaner and thus more original the art the better.

OK, I have gone ahead and modified the cover as per your request using a scan of the nameplate from the Quactica booklet. It looks pretty good but is a little bit jagged around the edges and if you can find the original nameplate art and forward it to me I should be able to make it look somewhat better.

Don't think I will be able to easily match the typeface in the nameplate for use as interior subheds, etc., as  suspect the word is a piece of art rather than a typed-out word. If you know or can find out from the artist who did it whether it is based on a specific font, that would be helpful. Otherwise, I will just use something else that is pleasing and internally consistent.

I did the lettering for the title myself. I wanted it to look something like the lettering on the Bayeaux Tapestry, but heavier. I trust you to find a suitable font for the interior type. I'm still looking for the original art work.

Have fun!

Well, what typeface did they use for that? "Norman Bold 1066"?

This Forum's Moon Panther took the initative to look for some suitable typefaces and I will play around with them. If we are not able to find a suitable match, however, it is not a big deal; there is certainly nothing wrong with the nameplate being unique.

Good, thanks! Has the recent move made finding things like that easier or harder?

On a separate, art-related note, can you please email me contact information, including email address and phone number if you have both of them, for Eric over at Lance & Laser? (And confirm that I am spelling his name correctly, etc.) Moon Panther also suggested we might be able to create some illustrations for the book using high-resolution photographs of the miniatures themselves. And if you have any decent electronic or hard-copy photos we could work with that would be great as well; black-and-white are fine for these purposes.

I took a quick look at the "Word" fonts. Baskerville Old Face might work.

I'm working from a library on the north side of Indy right now. I'll get that contact info to you tonight after I get home.

Have fun!
