Mud golems are a diverse group of constructs. The basic type is dirt cheap to create but not very durable- normal weapons can harm it, torches do double damage and magical fire destroys it if the golem fails a save. The advantages of a basic mud golem is price (25 gp for alchemical reagents), that it makes no sound, it can pass through almost any space (1/4") and can be non-lethal. It engulfs on any hit and the victim must fight his way out. This is a strength check, the golem' strength is 12. Those who fail to escape and are rendered unconcious (0 hp) are dropped and the golem goes after someone else. Depending on its orders, a mud golem may either kill or move a victim. The latter usually means the golem drags someone to a cell or pit.

More expensive types include those that are built around a frame (usually bones, wood or stone) which makes them faster and gives them claw attacks but inhibits their ability to pass through small spaces. Then there are those that have a better defenses against weapons (+1 to hit) and fire (magical fire does normal damage). A few have the ability to heal damage by absorbing more mud (regeneration 6), the ability to warp their skeletons (long reach) and/or the ability to turn mud to stone (strength is 20 for escape checks and claw damage increased to d8/d8). Obviously each of these upgrades means an increase in cost.
